Watching giraffe at Ant's Lodges

Ride report - Ant's Lodges

After her African Explorer Safari, Iris also visited our partners at Ant’s Lodges, back in the Waterberg Mountains of South Africa. Visiting our riding partners is indeed a wonderful part of my job, and Ant’s was definitely on my ever-growing list of exciting places to visit. Ant’s is a popular riding safari in South Africa: being a private reserve with no lions or elephants, it is ideal for groups of mixed abilities or people coming with non-riding partners. Sadly I could only manage a few days before having to go back to the reality of normal life, but managed to make...

Ride report - Chico Basin

WELCOME TO CHICO BASIN When I stepped off the plane in Colorado Springs and drove the short distance to Chico Basin Ranch I was aware that I was about to embark on an authentic ranch experience. Unlike other dude ranches where visitors enjoy a leisurely trail ride then head for a swim and a massage, Chico Basin is an 87,000-acre operation where you are a genuine part of the workforce. Guests come here for the full on cow boy experience, jobs include moving and sorting cattle, branding and vaccinating calves and even mending the fences! This is a working holiday –...

Ride report: Macatoo Camp, Okavango Delta

Jo Verth from the team at Equus Journeys looks back on her riding safari in the Okavango Delta, Botswana. She visited Macatoo Camp in November and came home with wonderful memories from this very special place. Macatoo Camp: first impressions of the Delta. On my arrival into Maun, as I stepped off the aircraft I was immediately welcomed by a cheery smile as the warmth of the African sun hit my skin. We were soon welcomed by a representative from  Macatoo Camp who ushered us to the awaiting light aircraft on the apron. The pilot was standing at the steps and...

Azores horseback holiday

Adventures in the Azores

Not many people have heard of the Azores, a small Portuguese archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Earlier in the year, I decided to bring a couple of friends on a riding holiday. Although they are experienced riders, none of them had been able to ride for the best part of a year and thought a full-week trail ride might be a bit much. Our new multi-activity programme in the Azores was the way to go: plenty of riding, but also the opportunity to stretch our legs and try other activities! FAIAL ISLAND: WELCOME TO THE MIDDLE OF...

Ride report - African Explorer safari

In March 2018, Iris embarked on a combo riding safari in Africa - the African Explorer, with 4 nights spent at Horizon Ranch in the Waterberg mountains (South Africa), and 3 nights in the Tuli Block (Botswana). Here is an account of her horseback adventures!   As I landed in Johannesburg in the early hours of a glorious Friday morning (and while everyone else in Europe had to suffer snow or rain!), I was beyond excited for the adventure ahead of me. There is something truly special about Africa, and I could feel that this was going to be a great journey.  I...

The Horseback Holidays Specialist 2018 Guide

The Horseback Travel Guide

In 2005, whilst riding on the first Atacama Crossing ride in Chile, the French adventurer Anne Mariage handed the reins of Cheval d'Aventure which she had created in 1972 during a horsebackjourney in Llanos of Colombia to Christophe Leservoisier. Whilst riding alongside her on this Path of the Incas, he became aware of the spirit and the values which constitute Cheval d'Aventure, and can be summarised in a few words: encounters, respect, curiosity, open-mindedness, riders and their horses the world over and the relationship between them. We are proud to present you our Horseback Travel Guide Our desire to create new rides continues, with that same travelling soul and the same desire to...
